This is the age people with disabilities are transitioning to adulthood and
learning skills for success in the community. They are learning
interdependence and what it means to cooperate. We strive to give them
the tools for success in the community. They learn critical skills that
increase the possibilities of success in the job market.
Members of the B.E.S.T. Troupe perform around the community bringing their
message of “We are here and we belong!” to audiences. Their presence in the
community expels myths and misconceptions about the abilities of people with
developmental disabilities. It shows them as capable young adults.
Performing arts is a “discipline”. It teaches self-control, good work ethics, and
responsibility. The same kinds of things a boss is looking for in an employee.
Communication skills are increased. Social skills are taught and reinforced each
time they meet new people. Audiences engage in conversations with them after
performances giving them opportunities to develop interactive conversation skills.
